Salivary Cortisol Collection

Follow this step-by-step guide to correctly collect, label and store a salivary cortisol sample using the Salivette® collection device to ensure accurate testing results.

Procedure for Collection of Salivary Cortisol with Salivette®

NOTE: Salivary cortisol must be collected between 11:00 pm and 12:00 midnight, unless another collection time has been specified by your doctor.

CAUTION: Do not use for children or any individual where there is a potential risk of swallowing the sponge/wad.

Collection Procedure

1. Relax for at least one (1) hour before collecting your saliva. High activity or excitement can raise your cortisol level.

2. For 30 minutes before collection, do not:

  • Brush or floss your teeth
  • Take medication
  • Eat or drink
  • Smoke

3. Remove any lipstick or lip balm.

4. Remove the stopper from the collection device by pushing it slightly to the side, then tip the white sponge/wad into your mouth.

Do not touch the sponge/wad with your fingers.

5. Allow the sponge/wad to absorb some moisture. Then very gently chew and roll it in your mouth for approximately three minutes to produce more saliva.

6. Do not chew the sponge/wad immediately before removing it, as this may force saliva out of the sponge/wad.

7. When finished, gently hold the saturated sponge/wad between your upper and lower front teeth and return it directly to the tube holder without touching it with your fingers.

8. Close the tube firmly with the cap.

9. Do not remove the collection cup from the device.

10. Write the following details on the Salivette® device label:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Collection time
  • Collection date

11. Keep the specimen container refrigerated at 4°C to 8°C after collection.

12. Return the specimen container to a collection centre as soon as possible.
